Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make healthy ice cream in the Solo Scoops?

The Solo Scoops is designed for more traditional recipes using milk, cream and sugar. If you’d like to experiment with alternatives like oat milk, honey or protein powder, the FreezeWand® is better suited for that.

Is it normal for the machine to make noise?

Yes, some noise is completely normal during operation.

Why is my ice cream soft? Can I make it firmer?

The Solo Scoops produces a soft-serve/ gelato consistency. For firmer ice cream, transfer it to a container and freeze it for a while before serving.

Do I need to keep the ice cream bowl in the freezer?

Yes. The Solo Scoops bowl needs to freeze for 16–24 hours, so it’s best to keep it in a level spot in your freezer. This way, you can make ice cream whenever you feel like it.

When should I turn the machine on?

Always turn the machine on before adding your mixture. Pour it in steadily (if you pour too slowly, the mixture may start freezing and jam the paddle).

How full should I fill the bowl?

Only fill the bowl to about ¾ full. While the machine produces up to 475ml of ice cream, it can’t handle that much liquid mixture at once.

Should my mixture be cold before churning?

Yes. Prepare your mixture about an hour in advance and keep it in the fridge so it’s properly chilled before use.

How do I know if the bowl is frozen enough?

Give it a shake (if it’s fully frozen solid, you shouldn’t hear any liquid moving inside).

How quickly should I use the bowl after removing it from the freezer?

Use it immediately. The bowl starts defrosting quickly, so have your machine plugged in and ready to go.

Is there a standard recipe ratio to follow?

A good rule of thumb is 2 parts cream to 1 part milk for a classic ice cream base. Find more recipes here.

When should I add mix-ins like chocolate chips or nuts?

Add mix-ins near the end of the process, after about 20–25 minutes of churning.

How do I clean the ice cream bowl?

Rinse it with lukewarm water to remove frozen bits, dry it thoroughly, and return it to the freezer. If it’s not fully dry before freezing, the paddle may get stuck next time.

What type of spoon should I use to scoop the ice cream?

Use only wooden or plastic spoons. Avoid metal scoops, as they can damage the soft non-stick interior.
